INSIDE is a narrative driven series about the figure’s relationship with interior spaces. The images feature a friend of mine in moments of contemplation, mundanity and stress as shown through cinematic vignettes. I begin my process by photographing the figure with a camera phone, which gives the images their 3:4 aspect ratio and obscures minor details. Because photographing the scene flattens the images, I hand trace and color over top of them in Photoshop with a tablet. Finally, I import the files into an audio recording program where I swap, cut and paste data from the image code. This operation introduces moments of chance and deviation from the homogenous nature of the original image. The file corruptions I’ve applied to the paintings become a central feature of the work as they relate to both emotional distress and the discussion of
digital painting.
As a colorblind individual, I’m also very interested in how viewers experience the work differently than me. I’ve chosen color relationships that attempt to challenge my perception and allow the viewer to see through my color choice biases. While the colors chosen aren’t a literal representation of my perception, they show the reliance colorblind individuals have on saturation in order to distinguish hues.
